How to: Holiday Wreath

Holiday wreath making tips & tricks

 from Michael Daigian

1. When buying your wreath ring make sure you buy a double wire ring. This will prevent the wreath from becoming an oval.

2. Pick greenery that does not drop needles when it dries. Avoid Douglas fir. The best evergreens to use are pine, cedar and juniper.

3. To make your wreath unique and contemporary add interesting accents such as eucalyptus pods, tallow berries, succulents, bromeliads, birch bark strips and mossy branches.

4. Cut all your materials first into shorter pieces, length depends on the size of the wreath.

5. Make little bundles of your materials before you start and wrap them with rubber bands, wire or twine. You will need about 30-40 small bundles of material for an 18”-24” ring.

6. Use spool wire to wrap the materials to the ring and pull tight so when you let go of the spool it does not unravel. 20 gauge wire works the best.

7. To begin your wreath start with one of the bundles of material that has some longer pieces in it. This will cover the empty space that the end piece will leave.

8. If you end up with a blank space where your wreath ends place your bow there and you will not have to worry about filling it with greenery.

9. If you want to your wreath to be lit I would recommend using a 35 light strand for a standard 18”-24” wreath. Start wrapping the lights from one side of the top or bow and continue all the way around. Make sure you tuck the strand into the wreath as you go this way you will just see the glow of the lights when you are finished not the wiring.

10. You can add in the larger accents like ornaments, pine cones or acorns after the wreath is complete with a hot glue gun.

Press: Grace Ormonde Wedding Style

We are so excited to be featured in the new Fall/Winter 2012 issue of Grace Ormonde Wedding Style magazine, the magazine hits stores today. 

 

This table design was really fun for us to get to use some of our favorite types of flowers in unique ways. Joyce from Events of Distinction designed the triangle table layout and set the tone for us at Michael Daigian Design to create designs that were modern and unique. 

 

The photo shoot took place on the upper level of Terra Gallery in San Francisco. The staff there was so amazing and accommodating, they even moved a painting for us from downstairs to our shoot location that matched our table perfectly.If you are unfamiliar with this venue please check out their website and think of them for your next event. We have been to many event's at Terra and designed for weddings that took place there. It is a perfect location if you want a unique open space or a "blank canvas" to create any type of style or look you want for your event.

Roberta from Resource One Inc. took the desired look, shape and feel of the table and created these custom linens and chair covers.

About 250 tall white calla's were used to create this custom floral chandelier. We even designed it took look like it was hanging from a calla stem.

Underneath this large chandelier we covered the mechanics with green galax leaves and you can see that the callas were stacked on top of each other to create the chandelier.

Designing free standing succulent runners took time and patience but we think it was worth it, don't you?

We used succulents, green fuzzy dianthus and milk plant to create this vibrant green and amazingly textured table runner.

We wrapped tall votive holders and the container of the middle low arrangement with a mesh of black crystals to give a subtle touch of bling to the table.

Low diamond shaped arrangement of yellow pin cushions, succulents and white phaleanopsis orchids was placed under the large chandelier to balance out the visual weight.

Black and silver footed vases from Accent Decor held clean lined arrangements of tall white callas, yellow pin cushions and succulents.

We accented the tall arrangements with black mesh to add a modern non-floral texture

Real Wedding: Ching & Andrey

On July 14th, 2012 Ching and Andrey got married at the beautiful Kunde Family Estate located in the heart of Sonoma County. The estate took up a vast 1,850 acres and it was complete with lush green vineyards and a view of the Mayacamas Mountain range in the backdrop. We wanted the design of the wedding to be whimsical yet still reflect the natural beauties of the wine country. The colors we had chosen on for the design were royal purple, raspberry, fuchsia, flame orange, and touches of moss green. We also added unique touches to all of our designs by including so many non-floral elements, like moss, birch bark, grape vines, mushrooms, eggplants, and artichokes!

Children's Flower Workshop

Last week, one of floral designers, Nixon Tran, had the pleasure of visiting the Cumberland Presbyterian Chinese Church in San Francisco to teach a room full of children how to make floral arrangements. We provided each of the kids with a few flowers and a basket, then proceeded to teach them the basics of floral design! Even Michael contributed to the workshop by cutting a few maple leaves from his home so the kids could add a little flare into their personal arrangements. Nixon said it was so rewarding to be able to teach a younger generation the beauty and uniqueness of floral design.

Once the workshop was over, the kids wrote in their class journals about how 

their day went with "Mr. Nixon".  

So sweet!

To thank Mr. Nixon for coming to the class and teaching the students, they in turn made him an origami flower arrangement. Now, we just might have to do our very own origami workshop here at Michael Daigian Design!

Memorial Day Weekend Madness

Memorial Day Weekend was a busy one for us here at Michael Daigian Design, we provided elaborate and beautiful florals for three back to back weddings in San Francisco and for the Stanford Senior Formal.

Real Wedding: Lindsay & Jake

Lindsey and Jake's wedding took place in the historic James Leary Flood Mansion in San Francisco. The keywords the bride wanted us to keep in mind when designing the custom florals were lush, elegant, romantic, unique, and secret garden. The desired color scheme for the stunning wedding was white and green.

 Lindsay's elegant bouquet was complete with white garden roses, white ranunculus, white peonies, green succulents, and lily of the valley.

We created a custom 8ft tall chuppah that was covered in lush greenery and white garden flowers creating a romantic look. It was almost as if you were stepping into your own secret garden.

We created five tall centerpieces in glass pilsner vases filled with white blossomed dog wood, lush green ivy, and jasmine. It gave a dramatic and elegant effect to the Flood Mansion dining room. 

The simple, yet elegant, white cake was finished with garden roses, ranunculus, lily of the valley, and green succulents. Cake by Living Room Events.

Real Wedding: Marisol & John

Marisol and John's wedding took place at the Saint Ignatius Church and the reception was at The Fairmont Nob Hill in San Francisco. The wedding was set to have a romantic and classic ballroom feel filled with white, red, gold, and navy blue accents.

 In the Bridal Bouquet we used white peonies, white ranunculus, white sweet peas, paper whites, and white lilacs. 

The Bridesmaid Bouquets were filled with red peonies, red ranunculus, and red piano roses. It was a unique and modern alternative to a classic red rose bouquet.

The escort card table arrangement was full of white delphinium, white stocks, white hydrangea, white blossom branches, and white snap dragons.

We made two large alter arrangements that had white delphiniums, white stock, hydrangea, snap dragons, white blossom branches, and white peonies.

The aisle decor bouquets were composed of elegant white hydrangeas and greens.

The wedding cake was finished with red ranunculus and red piano roses. Cake by Taste of Denmark.

Stanford Senior Formal  

The Stanford Senior Formal took place on May 26, 2012 at the SF Winery on Treasure Island. They wanted to create a sense of wonder in the design complete with vibrant purples, yellows, oranges, greens, and fuchsias. 

We designed a tall arrangement that we placed on each end of the bar full with wild grasses, allium, and other fun flowers into a tall cylinder vase.

We designed a free standing tall arangement where it looked as though the flowers were climbing up the metal frame. 

The designed whimsical wine barrel arrangements that were placed in low cylinder vases.

The illuminated floral arrangements were a hit at the Stanford Senior Formal and gave off the feel of wonder that was originally desired.
